Moog is a good fit for Durham

"It was also the first time Moogfest has been located in Durham, after previous stints in New York City and then in Asheville, North Carolina, the hometown of the Moog company but a more remote location. That fits nicely with Durham, which is positioning itself as an East Coast alternative to Silicon Valley and Austin, and there were faint echoes of South by Southwest."

Durham recognized for addressing diversity problems in the start-up sector

"Of the companies to come out of American Underground in 2015, for instance, about 30 percent are led by women and 22 percent are led by minorities. That’s significantly higher than most (admittedly fuzzy and tech-focused) estimates elsewhere for either group, which put the share of female-led ventures below 20 percent and the share of minority led-ventures below 10 percent."

RTP recognized for contribution to making the Triangle a known startup hub

"Starting in the 1950s, the park worked closely with Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University to provide low-rent space and training for students. The goal was to keep bright students in North Carolina after they graduated. Many stayed to start and run companies. Eventually the eight-county area between Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill became known as “The Triangle” and lured major employers, such as IBM."

Durham recognized for hotel growth spurt

"Drive 25 minutes northwest to Durham and you’ll find a downtown area reinventing itself from its tobacco- and textile-industry past to develop a thriving culinary, arts and entertainment scene fueled in part by dozens of local startups."

Business Inside Profiles "Awesome" American Tobacco Campus

"Durham, North Carolina has long been a center for innovation in tech, thanks in part to the universities of the Research Triangle. But now the city of 286,000 is becoming a hub for young companies looking to get their ideas off the ground."

— "Check out the awesome campus that is transforming Durham, North Carolina into a startup hub," Madeline Stone, Business Insider

!ExitEvent Cheers On Durham's Hip Startup Scene

"Other than the architecture, Durham is unrecognizable. Bars, restaurants, and music venues occupy the once-shuttered buildings. Hip 20- and 30-year-olds saunter along the sidewalks, popping into cafés and vintage stores. A trip downtown almost makes me feel like I'm back in Brooklyn."

Tech Crunch - Bound Custom Notebooks

"One interesting manufacturing start-up we met in Durham last week was Bound. This small printing company offers notebooks in multiple styles (including a vegan leather Moleskine-esque number) but with a twist. You can, if you so desire, have something different printed on every page. You can make a little notebook for just a range of dates or add a map, some tic-tac-toe boards, and a musical staff. You can pop in an iPhone design template or some graph paper."

Fast Company - Durham's Tech Scene

"Durham’s innovation scene is kindled by tech giants like IBM, Lenovo, and about 140 other companies with stakes in the ground at the 7,000-acre Research Triangle Park. It’s an unincorporated area, a swath of land belonging to no municipality, dedicated to R&D. Its secret sauce is a steady stream of computer science graduates from nearby Duke University, NCSU, and UNC-Chapel Hill, making the area a tech recruiting oasis, an electromagnet for technology companies in the American South, and a place prominent U.S. startups like Airbnb choose to outsource their design and development."

Smart Planet - The Smoffice

"Measuring in at about 20 square feet, it’s dubbed the world’s smallest office space. But what it lacks in size it makes up for in ambition in one North Carolina city...Cities are always looking for ways to grow their startup scene...The challenge can be to get that startup culture to stick. Gimmick or not, Durham seems to have successfully found ways to make that happen."

Fast Company - Durham, NC

"Cigarettes and technology startups have at least one thing in common: Durham, North Carolina. One hundred fifty years ago, Durham-based entrepreneurs Washington Duke and W.T. Blackwell battled for tobacco sovereignty...Today, Durham’s innovation scene is kindled by tech giants like IBM, Lenovo, and about 140 other companies with stakes in the ground at the 7,000-acre Research Triangle Park...Though Big Tobacco’s heyday has come and gone, Durham, you could say, is still smoking."

INC Magazine - A Small Orange, Douglas Hanna

"Douglas Hanna is the CEO of a multi-million dollar company, but you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at his office filled with mostly empty desks. But Hanna is confident that business is steadily humming—just not there. At least 20 of the company’s 38 employees are hard at work—remotely... Hanna, a junior at Duke University, works in the office—when he doesn’t have to go to class... He puts in about 40 to 50 hours a week toward the business, which he calls a priority over school. Hanna understands this mindset might not be good, but he’s focused on the long run with his business, which he plans to stick with after he graduates in December of 2012."

Tech Journal South - Groundwork Labs

"It’s always good to get a second chance... The North Carolina Research Triangle had an accelerator, very recently, and it was successful, and it closed up shop, which caused a lot of disappointment and heartbreak within the startup community. But it’s important to note that while Groundwork Labs will fill the void left by Launchbox in the American Underground in Durham, it’s not a replacement. It’s something new, with new players, a new mission, and a new vision."

The Atlantic - Durham Tech Start-ups

"Silicon Valley is the tech Mecca of the world, but is there a Southern city that can potentially rival the San Francisco Bay Area?... Durham, N.C., a part of Research Triangle Park, also is full of success stories... "I think Durham is one big, Groupon-like success story away from a wave of coverage about how good the area is for tech companies," Madrigal writes."

The Atlantic - Durham's Startup Culture

"Durham is a fascinating example of what happens when a community bands together to try to attract entrepreneurs. They've set up all the mechanisms and institutions to foster innovation and now they're waiting to see if startup culture can take root. The city itself has "great bones," as they say, with a dense downtown core filled with beautiful old-timey architecture... Durham is one big, Groupon-like success story away from a wave of coverage about how good the area is for tech companies."
